A company called SK pharmteco, based in the United States but operating in Ireland, has just opened two newly expanded manufacturing factories in Swords, Ireland. These new facilities will help the company produce larger quantities of important medicines more safely and efficiently. The expansions include two key upgrades: one adds about 705 gallons to the factory’s ability to produce small-molecule medicines, which are common types of drugs used to treat many conditions. The other upgrade focuses on producing ultra-high-potency medicines, which are stronger and require special handling to keep workers safe. These stronger medicines are often used in treatments like antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), which are designed to target specific cells, such as cancer cells. Declan Hannigan, the Site Head and General Manager of Small Molecule Europe at SK pharmteco, explained that these expansions will help the company handle these powerful medicines more safely and produce them on a larger scale. This means medicines can move from early testing phases into full-scale production more smoothly. The factory now has new equipment, including glass reactors for mixing chemicals, machines for drying medicines, and tools for purifying them. These investments also follow similar expansions by other companies. For example, Lonza, another pharmaceutical company, recently expanded its facility in Switzerland to meet the growing demand for complex cancer treatments. And Novo Nordisk, a well-known pharmaceutical company, invested nearly €500 million to increase production of its diabetes and weight-loss medicines in Ireland. These expansions show how the pharmaceutical industry is growing to meet the needs of patients worldwide.
