New Flu Vaccine Shows Promise but Needs More Work, Study Finds

A new experimental flu vaccine called OVX836 has completed a large clinical trial involving 2,850 healthy adults in Europe. This vaccine works differently from traditional flu shots by targeting a part of the flu virus that doesn’t change much between different strains. The study found that OVX836 did not meet the main goal of reducing flu cases by 50%, as it only showed a 24% reduction, which was not strong enough to be statistically significant. However, the vaccine did show some promise in reducing flu-like illnesses by 28%, flu caused by the A/H3 strain by 27%, and flu caused by the A/H1N1 strain by 25%. The vaccine was also found to be safe and triggered strong immune responses. Because of these results, the company plans to combine OVX836 with traditional flu vaccines to provide extra protection. Researchers believe that targeting this specific part of the virus could offer a new way to fight flu alongside existing vaccines, potentially leading to better and longer-lasting protection. Two pharmaceutical partners have already agreed to help develop a combined version of this vaccine, with the first human trial expected to begin in late 2027.
