A new type of eyeglass lens called Avulux has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help people with migraine who experience light sensitivity. This approval is important because it creates a new category for this kind of medical device in the U.S., meaning Avulux is now recognized as a proven solution for managing light-related symptoms in migraine patients. The FDA’s decision also helps patients, eye doctors, and businesses understand how and when to use these lenses safely and effectively.
Avulux lenses work by blocking specific wavelengths of light—480 nm and 590 nm—while allowing other types of light to pass through. This helps reduce the discomfort caused by bright or flickering lights, which is a common problem for people with migraine. The lenses are designed for people aged 12 and older who experience episodic migraine, meaning they have migraines on some days but not every day. They can be worn like regular glasses and can be made with or without a prescription.
Dr. Charles Posternack, the CEO and co-founder of Avulux, explained that light sensitivity is more than just a symptom of migraine—it’s a serious issue on its own that can disrupt daily life. Up until now, there hasn’t been an FDA-approved option specifically designed to address this problem. He hopes Avulux will become the standard treatment for light sensitivity in people with migraine.
Light sensitivity affects nearly 90% of people who have migraines, and it can make it hard for them to work, spend time with family, or carry out everyday activities. Juan Espinoza, MD, a doctor who studies pediatric migraine, added that kids with migraines are often not diagnosed or treated properly, even though it can seriously impact their development, school performance, and overall well-being. He supports solutions like Avulux that offer a non-invasive way to help patients, especially children, manage their symptoms.
The FDA’s approval came after reviewing scientific evidence, including clinical trials and real-world use. So far, over 50,000 people in the U.S. and Canada have tried Avulux lenses, and more than 1,400 eye doctors have recommended them to their patients. This new approval means that Avulux is now a trusted and recognized option for helping people with migraine cope with light sensitivity.
