Pharmaceutical Company Lonza Expands Swiss Facility to Meet Rising Demand for Advanced Cancer Treatments

Lonza, a leading company in pharmaceutical manufacturing, is investing in its facility located in Visp, Switzerland, to meet the growing need for a type of advanced cancer therapy called antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). These therapies are becoming increasingly popular in the medical field due to their potential to target cancer cells more precisely than traditional treatments. The expansion will focus on increasing the production of highly potent ingredients and the specialized chemical components, known as payload-linkers, that are essential for creating ADCs. This move supports Lonza’s goal of providing large-scale manufacturing for these complex treatments, helping to bring new, potentially life-saving medications to patients faster. Christian Seufert, who leads Lonza’s advanced synthesis division, explained that the rapid growth of the ADC market is creating a higher demand for these specialized ingredients and advanced manufacturing processes. He added, “This investment reflects our commitment to supporting the next generation of therapies by expanding our production capacity. This will allow our customers to move smoothly from development to large-scale production, ultimately helping to bring targeted, potentially life-changing treatments to patients.” The new manufacturing capabilities will be added to Lonza’s existing facility in Visp, which already meets strict quality and safety standards. The expanded site will include additional production and purification areas for payload-linkers, as well as laboratories for testing and process development. The facility is designed to be flexible, allowing it to produce a variety of payload-linker molecules. In addition to ADCs, the Visp site also manufactures monoclonal antibodies and supports the final steps of drug production. Lonza also plans to enhance quality control measures to ensure the safe handling of these highly potent ingredients. The company expects the expansion to be completed by 2028. This investment aligns with Lonza’s broader plan to strengthen its manufacturing capabilities, as evidenced by its recognition as a finalist in the ‘API Development and Innovation’ category at the CPHI awards last year.
