New Vaccine Could Be Stored Without a Fridge, Making Immunizations Easier in Remote Areas

A groundbreaking trial of a new tetanus and diphtheria vaccine that doesn’t need to be kept cold has shown promising early results. This could be a major step forward in making life-saving vaccines more accessible, especially in remote or hard-to-reach places, while also helping reduce pollution from cold storage and transportation. Currently, about half of all vaccines around the world are wasted each year because they lose their effectiveness due to temperature changes during storage or transport.

The new vaccine, called SPVX02, was developed by a UK biotech company called Stablepharma using a special technology called StablevaX. Unlike traditional vaccines that must be kept cold, this vaccine stayed effective for at least two years even when stored at temperatures up to 30°C (about 86°F). It also maintained its full potency after being exposed to extreme temperature swings, ranging from -20°C (-4°F) to +40°C (104°F). The results of the trial were published in a respected medical journal called *eClinicalMedicine*.

The study involved 60 healthy adults and was carried out at a research facility in Southampton, UK, with support from a national health research organization. By the 28th day after vaccination, all participants who received SPVX02 developed protective levels of antibodies—just as effective as those produced by licensed vaccines. Importantly, no serious side effects related to the vaccine were reported during the trial.

Professor Saul Faust, who led the research, explained, “One of the biggest challenges in delivering vaccines worldwide is keeping them cold from the moment they leave the factory until they reach the person who needs them. This study suggests that this new vaccine could stay safe and effective without needing refrigeration.”

He also added, “If larger studies confirm these results, this technology could completely change how vaccines are stored and distributed around the world.”

Özgür Tuncer, the CEO of Stablepharma, shared, “These results, which have been reviewed by other experts, mark a major milestone for our technology and the future of vaccines that don’t require refrigeration. This could be especially important in areas where access to electricity and cold storage is limited, helping more people get the vaccines they need.”

A larger trial, known as a phase 2b trial, is now underway to further test SPVX02 in a bigger group of people.
