Eisai and Biogen have introduced a new form of the Alzheimer’s medication Leqembi called Leqembi Iqlik. This version comes as a pre-filled autoinjector that patients can use at home once a week, making it easier than the previous method of receiving the medicine through an IV at a clinic. Leqembi Iqlik is approved for adults in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, which means they may have mild memory problems, confusion, or trouble finding the right words. This new injection can be used both to start treatment and, after 18 months, for ongoing maintenance doses. Patients can also switch between the injection and IV treatments whenever they prefer. The goal is to make Alzheimer’s care simpler for both patients and their caregivers by reducing the need for clinic visits and allowing treatment at home. Before starting Leqembi, patients will need to have an MRI scan of their brain, and they will also need follow-up scans to monitor for side effects. Overall, this new option could help make Alzheimer’s treatment more convenient and less time-consuming.
