New Study: Antibiotics Often Prescribed Unnecessarily for Common Cold

A recent study published in the journal ‘Family Practice’ reveals that many doctors are still prescribing antibiotics for common colds, which are typically caused by viruses. Antibiotics do not work against viruses and their overuse can lead to antibiotic resistance, making bacterial infections harder to treat in the future. The study found that doctors prescribed antibiotics in 39% of common cold cases, with a higher rate in low- and middle-income countries. As a pharmacist, I advise patients to avoid pressing for antibiotics when diagnosed with a common cold. Instead, focus on relieving symptoms and staying hydrated. Always remember that taking antibiotics when not needed can do more harm than good.
