Bayer, a global pharmaceutical company, is spending $2.2 billion to build a new, highly automated manufacturing site in New Albany, Ohio, USA. This investment follows over $7 billion Bayer has already spent in the U.S. over the last five years. The new factory will help Bayer expand its production of medicines for cancer<\/a> (oncology<\/a>), heart<\/a> disease (cardiovascular<\/a>), and kidney<\/a> disease (renal care). Sebastian Guth, Bayer\u2019s Global Chief Operating Officer, said: \u201cThe U.S. is a very important market for us. This new site will help us meet the growing demand for our medicines not just in the U.S., but also around the world.\u201d The factory will create around 600 new jobs at the New Albany International Business Park. It will feature advanced automation, including robotic systems for mixing, sifting, coating, and pressing medicines into tablets. The facility will be built in phases. The first part, which will produce the active ingredients of medicines, is expected to open in 2031. The second part, where medicines will be packaged and finalized, is planned for 2034. Bayer already has several other manufacturing sites in the U.S., including locations in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and San Diego. Other pharmaceutical companies are also expanding their U.S. operations. For example, BeOne Medicines recently announced a $300 million investment to grow its facility in New Jersey, focusing on medicines for blood diseases and cancer. Another company, Recipharm, is increasing its sterile medicine<\/a> production capabilities.
