A partnership between Samsung Bioepis and Teva Pharmaceuticals has grown to include up to six new potential biosimilar medicines. This expansion builds on their earlier agreement from March, which aimed to add up to 32 biosimilar treatments to a drug company called Sandoz\u2019s product lineup. Under this new deal, two specific biosimilar medicines have already been identified: SB41, which is similar to the asthma and allergy medication Fasenra (benralizumab), and SB44, which resembles the arthritis<\/a> and rare disease treatment Ilaris (canakinumab). Four other possible treatments are also part of this agreement. <\/p>\n

Biosimilars are nearly identical copies of expensive biologic drugs that have already been approved. They work just as well as the original drugs but often cost less, making treatments more affordable for patients and healthcare systems. The collaboration between Samsung Bioepis and Teva has already led to the successful launch of a biosimilar version of the drug Soliris (eculizumab), called Epysqli, in the United States.<\/p>\n

Richard Francis, the President and CEO of Teva, explained the importance of this expanded partnership: \u201cThis agreement is a big step forward for our biosimilar business. It helps us grow our product pipeline and builds on the strong partnership we already have with Samsung Bioepis in the U.S. By combining our growing list of treatments with our global commercial strengths, we can lead the way in making biosimilars more widely available and improve access to care for patients worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under the terms of the expanded deal, Samsung Bioepis will take the lead in developing and manufacturing the biosimilars, while Teva will handle their global marketing and sales. Kyung-Ah Kim, the President and CEO of Samsung Bioepis, added: \u201cAt Samsung Bioepis, we remain dedicated to making biosimilars accessible to more patients and healthcare systems around the world by strengthening our product pipeline and expanding our reach.\u201d<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the only recent move in the biosimilar market. In August, Sandoz, another major player in biosimilars, announced a $322 million partnership with Shanghai Henlius Biotech to advance up to 10 new biosimilar treatments. Sandoz is also investing in a new development center in Slovenia to prepare for what experts are calling the \u201cbiosimilar golden age,\u201d a period expected to bring many more affordable treatment options to patients.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
