A new drug combination has been approved in the UK for treating a severe type of lung cancer called extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC). The combination includes two medications: Zepzelca (lurbinectedin) from PharmaMar and Tecentriq (atezolizumab) from Roche. This treatment is specifically for adult patients whose cancer has not worsened after their first round of chemotherapy<\/a> and immunotherapy. The UK\u2019s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved this combination as a maintenance therapy, meaning it can be used to help keep the cancer under control after initial treatment. Dr. Julian Beach, an executive director at the MHRA, explained that this approval offers a new option for adults with ES-SCLC who are responding well to their initial treatment with atezolizumab, carboplatin, and etoposide. Zepzelca works by attaching to the DNA inside cancer cells, which helps kill them. It also reduces the activity of immune cells that help tumors grow. The approval is based on clinical trial data showing that patients receiving the combination therapy lived longer on average than those receiving atezolizumab alone\u201413.2 months compared to 10.6 months. Additionally, the combination delayed the cancer from getting worse by an average of 5.4 months, compared to 2.1 months with atezolizumab alone.
