Scientists from Imperial College London have developed a new method called EDEN (Enhanced Domestication) that helps grow bacteria<\/a> in the lab that were previously impossible to culture. Most bacteria in nature\u2014about 99%\u2014don\u2019t grow well in standard lab conditions, which means we miss out on discovering many of their potential benefits, including new medicines. <\/p>\n

The researchers created a special 3D-printed plate with tiny wells that controls how bacteria adapt from their natural environment (like pond water<\/a>) to lab-grown media. This gradual process reduces stress on the bacteria, helping them survive and grow better. Thanks to this tool, the scientists found that this method increased the diversity of bacteria they could grow by three times and identified ten times more unique types than before. They also doubled the success rate of growing bacteria trapped in tiny gel bubbles. <\/p>\n

Most excitingly, the team discovered a brand-new type of bacteria that produces strong antimicrobial compounds, which could help fight drug-resistant infections. The EDEN plate works by slowly introducing bacteria to lab conditions, preventing sudden changes that could harm them. The 3D-printing technique used to make the plates also avoids harmful glues or manual assembly, making the process safer and more reliable. <\/p>\n

The researchers believe this method could also be used for growing fungi, acting as a bioreactor for large-scale experiments, or even working with robots to quickly screen many samples at once. This could lead to finding new antibiotics<\/a>, cancer<\/a> treatments, or other lifesaving drugs.
