A leading global vaccine maker, CSL Seqirus, has shared exciting news about a new flu vaccine designed specifically for adults aged 50 and older. This vaccine combines three proven ways to boost protection against the flu, making it stronger and more effective for this age group. The results of an important large-scale study were published in *The Lancet Infectious Diseases*, a respected medical journal, which is a big step forward in flu prevention for older adults. <\/p>\n
The vaccine, called AUJEMFLU, has already been approved by medical regulators in the UK (MHRA) and Europe (European Commission) for adults 50 and older. This is the first time these three protective methods\u2014MF59 adjuvant (an ingredient that enhances the immune response), cell-based manufacturing (a cleaner way to produce the vaccine), and a higher dose of the active ingredient\u2014have been combined in a single flu shot. While each of these methods has been used separately for many years, this study is the first to test them together in one vaccine.<\/p>\n
Why is this important? The flu can cause serious health problems, including hospital stays and even death, especially for older adults. As people age, their immune systems weaken, making them more vulnerable to infections like the flu. This new vaccine aims to provide better protection for this high-risk group.<\/p>\n
The study involved 7,699 adults aged 50 and older from eight different countries. The results showed that this new vaccine was more effective than a standard flu shot with an adjuvant (a substance that helps the vaccine work better) made using eggs. It also performed just as well as another type of flu vaccine made using recombinant technology (a modern manufacturing method) for most flu strains. The vaccine also kept the immune system strong throughout the flu season and had a good safety record, with no major side effects reported.<\/p>\n
Dr. Gregg Sylvester, Chief Medical Officer at CSL Seqirus, said, “Publishing these results in a top medical journal is a huge achievement for our team and reflects many years of hard work in improving flu vaccines. This new evidence will help doctors, policymakers, and health experts decide on the best flu vaccination strategies for older adults.”<\/p>\n
Professor Colin Russell, Chair of the European Scientific Working Group on Influenza (ESWI), added, “Flu vaccine improvements usually come in small steps, with new technologies and better manufacturing methods. Even though many older adults get vaccinated each year, the flu still causes a lot of illness, hospital stays, and deaths in this group.
