A new treatment plan for a rare type of blood cancer called mantle cell lymphoma has been officially recommended by the UK\u2019s health cost watchdog, NICE. This is the first time an alternative first-choice treatment has been approved for adults with newly diagnosed mantle cell lymphoma who are healthy enough to receive a stem cell transplant. The treatment combines the cancer drug Imbruvica (ibrutinib) with a standard chemotherapy<\/a> and immunotherapy combination known as R-CHOP, followed by alternating cycles of R-DHAP or R-DHAOx. After these treatments, patients may continue with Imbruvica alone. This approach is suitable for adults whose cancer has not been treated before and who are candidates for a stem cell transplant. Mantle cell lymphoma is a rare and usually fast-growing form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that affects about 600 people in the UK each year. Most patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage, and while treatments can control the disease, it is often considered incurable. Currently, the standard treatment for suitable patients involves strong chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy, followed by a stem cell transplant and additional therapy to keep the cancer in check. However, a large clinical trial called the TRIANGLE study showed that adding Imbruvica to this treatment plan improves how long patients live without their disease getting worse, their overall survival, and reduces the risk of the cancer returning compared to standard care that includes a stem cell transplant. Anna Grint, from the charity Lymphoma Action, shared her thoughts on the new recommendation: \u201cWe are pleased that NICE has approved Imbruvica in combination with chemotherapy and immunotherapy as an important new option for people with mantle cell lymphoma.\u201d She also explained how this change could benefit patients: \u201cHaving access to this effective alternative might mean that some patients will not need a stem cell transplant at all. This could result in fewer side effects, a quicker recovery, and less disruption to their daily lives.\u201d Dr. David Lewis, a blood cancer specialis<\/a>t at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, added: \u201cThis approval is great news for patients with untreated mantle cell lymphoma because it offers an effective treatment that can help them live longer and reduces the harsh side effects linked to a stem cell transplant. It also means more treatment can be given in outpatient clinics rather than in hospital, and patients may spend less time in the hospital than they would have if they had a stem cell transplant.\u201d Amanda Cunnington, a representative from Johnson & Johnson, the company that makes Imbruvica, said: \u201cWe are happy that NICE has recommended this treatment plan for patients who are eligible.
