Two major healthcare organizations in Europe have joined forces to make medicines safer for patients. The European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries & Associations (EFPIA) and the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) have created a step-by-step plan to add barcodes to every single dose of medicine<\/a> sold in Europe. This change is designed to reduce mistakes when giving out or taking medications, such as giving the wrong dose or the wrong medicine. Currently, most medicine packages have barcodes, but the individual doses inside\u2014like pills in a blister pack, vials, or pre-filled syringes\u2014often do not. Studies show that scanning barcodes on each dose can cut medication errors by up to 41%. For new medicines, this change will start in 2031, and the goal is for all new medicines to have barcodes on every dose within the next five years. The plan will take 15 years to fully implement across Europe. By 2032, half of hospitals will have access to bedside scanning of these barcodes, and by 2036, that number will rise to 80%. The barcodes will include important information like the product code (to identify the medicine), expiration date, and the batch or lot number. This will help pharmacists and healthcare workers double-check that patients are receiving the correct medication and dose.
