A new treatment called ACARIZAX (12 SQ-HDM SLIT) has been accepted by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) for adults in Scotland who have moderate to severe house dust mite allergies<\/a> that do not improve with regular allergy medications. This treatment is available for patients aged 18 to 65 who have been confirmed to have a house dust mite allergy through medical tests and their symptoms.<\/p>\n

ACARIZAX is the first allergy immunotherapy tablet for house dust mite allergies available in Scotland. It is taken once a day under the tongue and works differently from usual allergy medicines. Instead of just relieving symptoms like a runny nose, sneezing, or wheezing, it helps the immune system build tolerance to house dust mites over time. This means it may provide long-lasting relief for people who have had allergies for a long time.<\/p>\n

House dust mite allergies can cause more than just sneezing\u2014they can also lead to blocked noses, difficulty breathing, and even affect mental health and daily life. Managing these allergies often means extra costs for cleaning or special bedding, as well as frequent doctor visits and medication. These allergies also put pressure on the NHS due to the need for treatments and hospital care.<\/p>\n

Experts who reviewed the treatment for the SMC agreed that there is a great need for better options for people with severe house dust mite allergies. This new treatment offers an alternative for those whose symptoms are not well controlled by their current medications. It is estimated that about 1,960 people in Scotland could benefit from this treatment each year.<\/p>\n

The SMC made their decision after reviewing three large clinical trials where patients took either ACARIZAX or a placebo alongside their usual care for one year. Those who took ACARIZAX had significantly fewer allergy symptoms and needed less relief medication compared to those who took the placebo. Side effects were usually mild or moderate, and most people were able to continue the treatment without issues.<\/p>\n

Dr. George Raptis, a specialis<\/a>t in children\u2019s allergies at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: \u201cHouse dust mite allergies can be very difficult to manage and have a big impact on daily life in Scotland. They can affect not just how people feel day to day, but also their ability to work and enjoy life.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThese effects are often not fully reported, so we may not realise how much this allergy affects people. The SMC\u2019s approval of this new treatment is a big step forward, offering a way to treat the root cause of the allergy for patients who still struggle with symptoms despite their current treatments.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anne Biggs, Deputy Head of Clinical Services at Allergy UK, said: \u201cWhen house dust mite allergies are not controlled, they can disrupt sleep, daily activities, and overall well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cAllergy UK is happy with the SMC\u2019s decision, as it gives new hope to patients in Scotland who have not found relief with other medications. This treatment could be a long-term solution for many.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
