NHS England has given the go-ahead for a new treatment called delayed-release mercaptamine bitartrate to be routinely prescribed for patients in England aged one year and older who have a rare kidney<\/a> condition called nephropathic cystinosis. About 200 people in the UK are affected by this condition. The new treatment can be taken twice a day, unlike the current treatment, which must be taken four times daily. This change will make managing the condition easier for patients and their families.<\/p>\n

Chiesi UK and Ireland, the company that makes the new treatment, has welcomed this decision. David Game, a kidney specialis<\/a>t who helped propose this new treatment, said, “Nephropathic cystinosis is a lifelong condition, and this decision is a big step forward for people in England living with it. It gives patients and their doctors another treatment option, which means they can choose what works best for them.”<\/p>\n

Nephropathic cystinosis happens when a substance called cystine builds up inside cells, causing damage to tissues and organs, especially the eyes and kidneys. Around 150 patients in England are expected to qualify for this new treatment under the new NHS policy.<\/p>\n

David Garz\u00f3n, a leader at Chiesi UK and Ireland for rare diseases, said, “This is a big moment for people with nephropathic cystinosis in England. The twice-daily dose can make treatment easier for patients and their families. This decision also means more people across the UK can access this treatment, including those in Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland, where it has already been approved.”<\/p>\n
