Eli Lilly, a major pharmaceutical company, is spending $2.8 billion to acquire AtaiBeckley, a biopharmaceutical company working on new treatments for depression that doesn\u2019t respond to standard medications. These treatments are different from traditional antidepressants<\/a> because they focus on helping brain cells reconnect and grow new connections, rather than just adjusting chemical levels in the brain. Many people with severe depression struggle to find relief<\/a> even after trying multiple treatments, and researchers believe this could be because their brain cells have lost some of their ability to adapt and connect properly. AtaiBeckley\u2019s two leading treatments, BPL-003 and VLS-01, use psychedelic compounds like 5-MeO-DMT and DMT, which are given in controlled clinic sessions. Early studies show that BPL-003 can quickly and significantly reduce depressive symptoms, with benefits lasting for months after just two-hour sessions. Carole Ho, a leader at Eli Lilly, said, “Treatment-resistant depression persists even after multiple treatments have failed. Millions of people are still searching for relief and desperately need a therapy that works. Advancing AtaiBeckley\u2019s investigational therapies gives us a real chance to change that.” In addition to the $2.8 billion upfront cost, Eli Lilly may pay up to another $1 billion depending on future milestones. Srinivas Rao, CEO of AtaiBeckley, explained, “Our goal is to show that mental illnesses can be treated at their root cause, not just their symptoms. Lilly\u2019s expertise will help us move this work forward for people who haven\u2019t responded to existing treatments.” The deal is expected to finalize in the third quarter of 2026, pending standard approvals. This isn\u2019t the only psychedelic-based depression treatment in development. Last March, another psychedelic drug, psilocybin (found in \u2018magic mushrooms\u2019), showed promise in treating treatment-resistant depression, with higher doses helping patients stay symptom-free longer. Additionally, in January 2025, the FDA<\/a> approved Spravato, a nasal spray from Johnson & Johnson, which offers a simpler way to use a similar treatment compared to daily pills.
