Mission Therapeutics, a biotechnology company based in Cambridge, has agreed to sell its kidney<\/a> drug MTX652 to Dimerix Limited, an Australian company specializing in kidney disease treatments. The deal is worth up to $292 million, which includes an initial payment plus additional future payments if certain milestones are met. There may also be royalties on future sales of the drug if it becomes commercially successful. MTX652 is currently in a late stage of development for acute kidney injury, meaning it shows promise in early tests but still needs further studies before it can be approved for patient use.<\/p>\n

In addition to the sale, Mission Therapeutics will receive funding that will help speed up the development of another drug, MTX325, which is designed to treat Parkinson\u2019s disease and is currently in early-stage clinical trials.<\/p>\n

MTX652 is a first-of-its-kind drug that works by helping the body remove damaged parts of cells called mitochondria, which can contribute to kidney disease. Dimerix will now take over the development of MTX652 for acute kidney injury.<\/p>\n

Dr. Anker Lundemose, Executive Director at Mission Therapeutics, shared: \u201cMTX652 has shown strong results in early-stage testing, and there is a great need for new, effective treatments for acute kidney disease. Dimerix has deep experience in kidney disease and the skills to further develop and bring this important drug to patients faster.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Lundemose also noted that this sale improves Mission Therapeutics\u2019 financial position, allowing the company to focus more resources on developing MTX325 for Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n

Dr. Nina Webster, CEO and Managing Director of Dimerix, explained: \u201cMTX652 is an innovative drug with unique benefits, and acquiring a drug that is already in a late stage of development for acute kidney disease is an important step in our plan to expand our kidney disease treatments. This drug fits well with our current projects, including a late-stage treatment for a type of chronic kidney disease called FSGS, and helps us cover a broader range of kidney diseases from sudden injury to long-term conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mission Therapeutics stated that this sale aligns with their strategy to partner with companies that have the best expertise to develop drugs in specific areas. Dimerix has a strong track record in kidney disease treatments, including a late-stage drug for FSGS, which makes them a strong partner for MTX652.<\/p>\n
