The European Pharmacopoeia Commission has published an updated chapter (5.1.6) on alternative microbiological testing methods, making it easier for professionals to follow new standards. This revision, included in Issue 13.2 of the European Pharmacopoeia, modernizes quality control by replacing older methods with newer technologies. It also clearly defines the roles of suppliers and users, ensuring everyone understands their responsibilities. This update is part of a broader effort to support digitalization in pharmaceutical quality decision-making, as seen in another recent chapter (5.38) published in January. The demand for faster and more efficient microbiological testing is growing, especially for methods that can quickly count and identify microbes at the same time. Artificial intelligence (AI) could help speed up these processes, but high initial costs and a shortage of trained operators are slowing its adoption. To make implementation smoother, the revised chapter now includes multiple validation strategies based on risk assessments. For example, it allows the use of existing data and lets professionals test multiple methods at once. This updated chapter will become mandatory on April 1, 2027. Meanwhile, industry groups like the EDQM are working to improve how microbiological testing is regulated. Recent research also suggests that a method called loop<\/a>-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) could offer a faster alternative to traditional testing.
