Scientists have developed a much simpler way to manufacture a key ingredient in some of the most popular type 2 diabetes<\/a> medications, including Forxiga (dapagliflozin), Invokana (canagliflozin), and Jardiance (empagliflozin). These drugs belong to a class called SGLT2 inhibitors, which help control blood sugar levels. The new method uses basic, safe ingredients like sugar (from dextrose powder) and common household vinegar, making the production process easier, safer, and more affordable. Previously, creating these drugs required complex, expensive, and sometimes hazardous steps, including the use of highly reactive chemicals and advanced lab techniques like photochemistry or electrochemistry. The old process could take up to 20 separate steps just to attach a carbon atom to a sugar molecule, a critical step for these medications. The new two-step process simplifies this by mixing sugar with vinegar-like substances under mild acid conditions, allowing the drug to form naturally as crystals. This breakthrough was achieved by researchers from Scripps Research and the University of Bristol. It removes many of the technical and safety barriers that made large-scale production difficult in the past. The method is not patented, which means generic drug companies could use it to produce these medications more cheaply, potentially lowering costs for patients. The research team also believes this approach could be used to create entirely new types of sugar-based medicines, not just diabetes drugs.
