This treatment is now available for adults with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma—a type of incurable blood cancer—who have already tried at least three different therapies. These therapies must include an immunomodulatory agent, a proteasome inhibitor, and an anti-CD38 antibody, but the cancer has continued to progress despite these treatments.

Multiple myeloma is a challenging disease, and most patients experience relapses, requiring new treatments over time. The SMC’s decision means that around 44 patients per year in Scotland could benefit from talquetamab, with the number expected to grow as doctors gain more experience with the treatment.

In a key clinical study called the MonumenTAL-1 trial, which involved 154 patients treated with talquetamab every two weeks, 70% of patients showed a significant response to the treatment. These responses were deep and long-lasting, with patients being followed for an average of 23.4 months. The SMC considered these results meaningful, especially for patients whose cancer has become resistant to previous treatments.

Dr. Jennifer Travers, a Consultant Haematologist at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, shared her thoughts on the approval: “I’m very pleased that talquetamab has been approved for patients with myeloma in Scotland. This is great news because it gives patients more treatment options for relapsed myeloma. Having another therapy with a different target means doctors can better tailor treatments to each patient’s needs, offering a more personalised approach.”

Gabrielle King, Senior Policy Officer at Myeloma UK, also expressed her excitement: “This is wonderful news and will make a big difference for people with myeloma in Scotland. Talquetamab works in a completely different way compared to existing treatments. Myeloma UK has been involved in every approval of myeloma treatments since 1997, providing evidence and expert testimony to help get these treatments available on the NHS. Each new treatment gives patients hope for a brighter future and brings us closer to finding a cure.”

Talquetamab is a type of treatment called a bispecific antibody. It works by attaching to two targets: GPRC5D on myeloma cells and CD3 on immune cells called T-cells. This redirects the T-cells to attack and destroy the myeloma cells. GPRC5D is found in high levels in multiple myeloma cells, making it a strong target for treatment.

Nina Pinwill, UK Director of Strategic Access, Pricing, and Operations at Johnson & Johnson, commented: “For people living with multiple myeloma, treatment options can become limited as the disease progresses, especially for those who have already tried several lines of therapy. The SMC’s approval of talquetamab is an important step for eligible patients in Scotland, providing access to an additional treatment option where the need is high. We’re pleased to bring this innovative treatment, which targets a different mechanism, to the myeloma community and hope it leads to improved lives for patients.”

Johnson & Johnson has announced that Talvey (also known as talquetamab) has been approved by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) […]

[543

post-3258","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pharmaceutical-news
["GET
