A new migraine<\/a> treatment called Aquipta (atogepant) has been approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for use on the NHS in England and Wales. This medicine<\/a> can be used to treat sudden migraine attacks in adults, but only if they have already tried at least two other common migraine treatments called triptans that did not work well enough or could not be taken. Patients must also have had an insufficient response to over-the-counter painkillers like ibuprofen or paracetamol before being eligible for Aquipta. The medicine has been approved by the UK\u2019s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and is now expected to be available to suitable patients through the NHS. Migraine is a common condition in the UK, affecting around 10 million adults. It causes moderate to severe headaches, along with symptoms like nausea, sensitivity to light, and sensitivity to sound. It also has a major impact on the economy, with lost productivity costing the UK an estimated \u00a38.8 billion each year. Rob Music, Chief Executive of the Migraine Trust, explained that getting the right care for migraine can be inconsistent across the country, leading to delays in treatment or difficulties accessing specialis<\/a>t care. Many people with migraine have to try several different medicines before finding one that works for them. He welcomed the NICE decision, saying it adds an important new treatment option for eligible patients. Professor Alex Sinclair, a migraine expert from the University of Birmingham, added that this new option gives doctors more choices when treating acute migraine attacks. The approval is supported by a large clinical study called the Eclipse trial, which showed that 24.3% of patients who took atogepant were free from pain two hours after treatment, compared to just 13.1% of patients who took a placebo. Rachael Millward, a medical director at AbbVie UK, the company that makes Aquipta, said migraine is a challenging neurological<\/a> condition that can severely affect quality of life, leading to social isolation and missed workdays.
