A recent clinical trial has found that adding a new immunotherapy drug called durvalumab to traditional chemotherapy<\/a> and radiation therapy can help patients with bladder<\/a> cancer stay cancer-free for at least a year without needing to remove their bladder through surgery. The results were presented at a major cancer conference in the United States. This is significant because bladder cancer that has grown into the bladder\u2019s muscle wall is usually treated with surgery to remove the bladder entirely. Such surgery is major and requires patients to use an external bag to pass urine for the rest of their lives. The trial, led by Professor Nick James from The Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, involved 54 patients. After one year, 46 of these patients\u201485%\u2014showed no signs of cancer returning. In older studies where immunotherapy was not used, only 60% of patients remained cancer-free after one year with the same combination of chemotherapy and radiation. Professor James explained that these findings are important because they prove that patients can avoid the need for bladder removal while still effectively treating their cancer. Keeping the bladder means patients can maintain their normal daily routines and independence without major, life-altering surgery.
