This is the first time the company’s experimental KMCAR T-cell therapy will be tested in humans. The therapy is designed to treat patients with relapsed or refractory kappa-restricted multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. The trial has been approved by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration and received ethical clearance, meaning it has met all safety and ethical standards to proceed. This marks the transition from laboratory research to human testing. The Koala study is a dose-escalation trial, which means researchers will gradually increase the dose of the therapy to evaluate its safety and early effectiveness. The KMCAR T-cell therapy is a personalized treatment made from the patient’s own immune cells, which are modified in a lab to target cancer cells while sparing healthy cells. This is different from other approved CAR-T therapies, which target BCMA, another protein found on myeloma cells. The KMCAR therapy works by targeting a protein called the Kappa Myeloma Antigen (KMA), which is only found on myeloma cells and not on normal immune cells. This selective approach may allow the therapy to destroy cancer cells more precisely, reducing harm to healthy cells and preserving the patient’s immune system. The KappaMab antibody platform, which is the foundation of this therapy, has already been studied in multiple earlier clinical trials with promising safety results. Pre-clinical research conducted with the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre showed that the therapy effectively and durably killed myeloma cells that carry the KMA protein. Dr. Rosanne Dunn, Chief Scientific Officer and Co-Founder of HaemaLogiX, shared her thoughts on this important milestone, stating that years of research and collaboration have led to this moment. She expressed excitement about starting human trials and the potential insights the Koala study will provide. Dr. Chris Baldwin, CEO of HaemaLogiX, emphasized the significance of this trial, calling it a major step forward in the development of CAR-T therapies for multiple myeloma. He highlighted that the KMCAR T-cell therapy’s ability to target the KMA antigen sets it apart from existing treatments and could expand the benefits of CAR-T therapies for more patients. Multiple myeloma is the second most common blood cancer worldwide, and despite advances in treatment, most patients experience relapse over time. This new therapy offers hope for a more targeted and effective treatment option for those who have relapsed or whose cancer has not responded to other therapies.

HaemaLogiX, an Australian biotechnology company, has started enrolling patients in a new clinical trial called the Koala study at the […]

[543

post-3208","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pharmaceutical-news
["GET
