A biotechnology company called Cellular Intelligence is using artificial intelligence (AI) to help develop a new type of therapy for Parkinson\u2019s disease. Novo Nordisk, a well-known pharmaceutical company, has given Cellular Intelligence permission to work on its cell therapy program for Parkinson\u2019s. This therapy uses special cells called pluripotent stem cells, which are grown in the lab to become dopamine-producing cells. These cells could help replace the damaged cells in the brains of people with Parkinson\u2019s, which cause symptoms like tremors<\/a> and stiffness. <\/p>\n

Cellular Intelligence\u2019s AI technology will help speed up the process of creating and testing this therapy, making it faster and more efficient to produce. Normally, developing cell therapies is a long and complicated process, but AI can analyze millions of different conditions to find the best way to grow and use these cells. This could help bring the treatment to patients much sooner than usual. <\/p>\n

Novo Nordisk is currently testing this therapy in the first phase of human clinical trials. As part of the agreement, Cellular Intelligence will receive payments for reaching certain milestones and a portion of future sales if the therapy is successful. <\/p>\n

Micha Breakstone, PhD, CEO of Cellular Intelligence, shared his excitement about the collaboration, saying, “This cell therapy program for Parkinson\u2019s is groundbreaking. It combines cutting-edge scientific discoveries with the trusted expertise of a major pharmaceutical company like Novo Nordisk. We are honored to be part of this important work.”<\/p>\n

This partnership also fits with recent efforts by health regulators to create guidelines for using AI in medicine<\/a>. In January, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA<\/a>) introduced ten principles for responsible AI use in healthcare. This could help ensure that AI is used safely and effectively in developing new treatments.<\/p>\n

Jacob Petersen, Senior Vice President of Global Research at Novo Nordisk, also expressed enthusiasm for the potential of AI in medicine. He said, “Combining developmental biology, genomics, and AI on one platform opens exciting possibilities for improving healthcare, especially in the field of cell therapy.”<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time AI has been used to speed up medical research. In February, another pharmaceutical company, Bristol Myers Squibb, partnered with a tech company called Evinova to use AI in making clinical trials faster and more cost-effective. <\/p>\n

In addition to this new collaboration, Novo Nordisk recently made a $2.1 billion deal to advance next-generation oral therapies, including its popular obesity treatment, Wegovy<\/a> (semaglutide<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
