This comes after a slower start since the drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2023. In the first full year after approval, Leqembi generated around $279 million in sales. Last year, sales grew to about $555 million, and now Eisai is confident that sales will rise to $904 million next year. Most of this growth is expected to come from North America, where Leqembi is already a leading treatment for early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Eisai’s CEO, Haruo Naito, explained that Leqembi is outperforming other similar treatments, including Kisunla, made by Eli Lilly. Eisai has been working hard to make sure patients start treatment early and stay on it for the long term. In the U.S., 72% of patients continue using Leqembi after 18 months, and 67% stay on it for two years. Two main challenges have slowed down Leqembi’s growth: the need for a special brain scan called an amyloid-beta confirming-diagnosis to start treatment, and the fact that the drug is given through an IV infusion, which can be inconvenient for patients. To fix these issues, Eisai is introducing two major innovations. First, they are developing a simpler blood test to confirm if a patient has amyloid-beta buildup in their brain, which is necessary for Leqembi treatment. In 2025, 15% of confirmatory diagnoses were done using this blood test, up from just 1.25% at the beginning of 2024. Eisai expects this number to grow to over 50% by 2028 as more blood test options become available. Second, Eisai recently launched an autoinjector called Leqembi Iqlik, which allows patients to give themselves the injection at home once a week after the initial IV treatment. This change has already helped attract new patients to both the IV and autoinjector versions of the drug. The autoinjector is expected to get FDA approval for use as an initial treatment this summer, with similar approvals likely in Japan and China later this year. Eisai believes this will make Leqembi more accessible to patients who might have avoided the therapy before because of the need for IV infusions. Eisai has big plans for Leqembi’s future, aiming for sales of $1.6 to $1.8 billion by 2027. Next year, 2026, is expected to be the year when Leqembi’s sales really take off. Over the past year, Eisai’s total pharmaceutical revenue reached about $5.1 billion, growing by 8% from the previous year. Despite a drop in operating profit, the company reports record-high overall revenue of $5.2 billion, a 5% increase. Leqembi, along with other drugs like Lenvima and Dayvigo, has contributed to this growth.

Eisai, the company that makes the Alzheimer’s drug Leqembi, expects its sales to nearly double next year, reaching about $900 […]

[543

post-3199","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-pharmaceutical-news
["GET
