Biologic drugs, which are more complex than traditional medications, now make up over half of all new drugs in development. However, their complicated manufacturing process is causing delays in getting these life-saving treatments to patients. A recent report from Accenture, a global consulting firm, found that 64% of drug launch delays in 2024 were due to issues in manufacturing or quality control, partly because biologics require advanced production methods. The report also highlights that supply chain problems, economic uncertainty, and competition are making it harder for companies to keep up. To address these challenges, experts recommend using smart technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and advanced data analytics. These tools can help improve manufacturing efficiency, reduce costs, and speed up the drug development process. However, many pharmaceutical companies still struggle to fully integrate these technologies into their operations. According to the report, only 35% of manufacturers describe their companies as fully digitally connected. Most companies are only in the early to middle stages of adopting digital solutions. While some improvements have been made in supply chain and technology transfer, many digital efforts are limited to small, low-risk projects that don\u2019t fully modernize their systems. The report warns that without better data infrastructure and collaboration, these fragmented efforts may lead to wasted resources and missed opportunities. The COVID-19<\/a> pandemic showed how fragile global supply chains can be, and recent geopolitical tensions, such as trade restrictions and conflicts, continue to add pressure. To adapt, many drugmakers are turning to AI for help. For example, Novo Nordisk has partnered with OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) to use AI across its entire drug development and manufacturing process. Other major companies, including Eli Lilly, Sanofi, Moderna, and Thermo Fisher, have also teamed up with OpenAI or invested in advanced computing solutions to improve their production capabilities.
