Herpes is a common virus that causes lifelong infections, often leading to cold sores (usually from HSV-1) or genital herpes (usually from HSV-2), though either type can affect the mouth or genitals. The virus spreads easily through skin or mucous membrane contact, even when no symptoms are present, and stays in the body permanently. While existing antiviral drugs can help manage outbreaks, they don’t fully stop the virus from reactivating or reduce the latent (hidden) reservoir of the virus in the body, which is why herpes often comes back and can become resistant to treatment.

Adibelivir works differently from current medications by targeting a specific part of the virus’s replication process. In lab tests, the drug was highly effective against herpes strains, including those resistant to acyclovir. Animal studies also suggest it may help reduce the hidden virus in the body, which could potentially lead to a long-term cure—a major advance over existing treatments.

In early human trials, researchers tested adibelivir in healthy volunteers to check its safety, how well it works in the body, and the best dosage. Participants received single doses of 50mg, 100mg, or 200mg, or multiple daily doses of 25mg. The drug was quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, reached its highest levels within hours, and remained in the body for about five days. Side effects were minimal, with no serious issues reported even at the highest doses tested.

These promising results suggest adibelivir could be a breakthrough in treating herpes, especially for patients with resistant infections or frequent outbreaks. Since herpes is a lifelong condition that affects millions worldwide, this new drug could address a major unmet need in healthcare, offering a more effective and convenient treatment option. Scientists are now planning further studies to confirm its safety and effectiveness in people with herpes infections.

A new experimental medication called adibelivir (IM-250), developed by Innovative Molecules, is showing strong potential in early studies to treat […]

[543

post-3159","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-pharmaceutical-news
["GET
